The Art of Dry Stone Walling: A Living Cultural Heritage
The art of dry stone walling was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018.
UNESCO highlights that the practice calls for an intuitive understanding of geometry and physics, as well as skill in handling raw stone. These structures embody a profound understanding of material, balance, terrain and climate, carried and refined across generations.
Beyond a Traditional Art Workshop
An extraordinary dry stone wall, rising approximately five to six metres within the courtyard of Islander Art Lab, forms the physical and conceptual starting point of the experience.
The wall sits above a tectonic fault, bringing the geological body of Paros and generations of human knowledge together within the same structure.
Taking the form of an immersive cultural encounter, the experience brings together the intellectual depth of a seminar, the active engagement of a workshop and direct sensory contact with the Cycladic landscape.
Knowledge is not presented at a distance. It is approached through stone, touch, close observation, conversation and the physical experience of standing within the place itself.
Curiosity, conversation and the pleasure of discovery keep the experience open, generous and alive.
You are invited to become aware of your own presence within the vast timelines of geological and human history, while discovering a more complex and authentic relationship with Paros.
This is not a traditional art workshop, and no previous knowledge or artistic skill is expected. All levels are welcome.
You are not taught an artistic technique. Instead, you are introduced to the Art of Seeing: a slower pace and a more attentive way of encountering material, place and presence.
Through direct engagement with the dry stone wall, you learn to notice geological time, material structure, balance and traces of human labour in what might otherwise be passed without a glance.

The workshop concludes inside the atelier with an aperitif and a relaxed, intimate conversation around selected works by the artist.
Having first experienced the material and geological world from which the work emerges, you encounter the artworks with your senses already sharpened and your understanding of place deepened.
What stays with you is not a technique, but the Art of Seeing itself: a practice of attention that does not end when the encounter does. First experienced here, among the stone and the courtyard's own quality of light and air, it continues into other landscapes, artworks and the ordinary corners of daily life.
